Job Description

FP&A / Managerial Accountant based in our Boston office, and working closely alongside our nine North American Schools, as well as central support functions. Reporting to the General Manager and Vice President for North America, you will also work closely with a dedicated North American financial accounting group in the Atlanta area, as well as Kaplan Language Group’s London-based accounting team, to provide FP&A and operational analysis support to the North American business; controllership, budgeting and forecasting support to the Atlanta-based accounting function and management information support to the London Head Office. This is a high-profile role with direct access to key members of the senior management team.

Main responsibilities and functions

  • Providing management with analysis and insight into North American performance
  • Monthly P&L in depth analysis in conjunction with Atlanta-based accounting function and operational teams based across the US and Canada, to understand business drivers
  • Building strong relationships with School Directors and department heads to whom you will provide Dashboard reporting and P&L analysis
  • FP&A support to expand to sales analysis and ad-hoc modelling, supporting senior finance and operations management in London and Boston
  • Regular updating and review of Operational KPIs to ensure completeness in our accruals and in-depth understanding of our operational efficiency and cost management
  • Close coordination with Atlanta-based accounting team, and Boston-based General Manager to build budgets and forecasts for the US and Canadian school, sales, and central operations
  • Adding value to decision making by providing recommendations for measurement and target setting
  • General support of support functions in terms of monthly tasks including accounting, analysis, financial reporting, and ad hoc reviews

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration (with a strong focus on Accounting). Other degrees will be considered with strong relevant experience and post-graduate certification/professional course work
  • Two to three years’ work experience in an audit, controllership, or management accounting role
  • Experience working with multiple management levels and functional roles outside of a finance/accounting group
  • Proven ability in bringing numbers to life for non-Finance stakeholders
  • Prior experience in budgeting and forecasting
  • General ledger accounting experience
  • Experience and/or general understanding of SOX compliance
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Skills and competencies

  • High level of initiative, self-motivation, and drive – an ability to work independently with guidance
  • Advanced Excel knowledge (lookups & indexing functions, pivot tables, formatting of data, etc.)
  • Ability to create ad-hoc models and interpretive presentations to analyze and present financial and general business decisions
  • Strong technical accounting skills
  • Strong customer service ethos and high attention to detail – willingness and desire to interact productively with non-finance staff to provide analytic support and financial guidance
  • Ability to prioritise, plan, manage time efficiently and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Quick to pick up and apply knowledge

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more foreign language ability 
  • Prior experience with international students
