We are seeking module tutors with a Psychology background to deliver on our online programmes. In this role, you will lead and support the learning of our online students working in close collaboration with our university partner, the University of Essex.  Further information on our programmes can be found at https://online.essex.ac.uk/


We are looking for individuals with experience in any of the following subject areas:


  • Psychology of Sport and Exercise

  • Investigative Psychology

  • Reasoning and Decision-Making

  • Occupational Psychology

  • Developmental Science

  • Critical Social Psychology

  • Educational Psychology

  • Psychology and the Media

  • Counselling Psychology and/or Wellbeing

  • Psychopathology

  • Social Psychology 

  • Fundamentals of Effective Learning in Psychology (introductory module with a focus on developing academic writing skills)

What you’ll bring to the role 
 

Essential criteria

  • A PhD in a Psychology related area (we cannot accept tutors who have not completed their PhD unless they are applying for the Fundamentals of Effective Learning in Psychology module).

  • Experience of teaching and assessing at some/all levels 4-7 within the UK HE sector.

  • A willingness to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as required/appropriate to experience.

  • Excellent IT skills, primarily Word, Excel, PowerPoint and online meeting software.

  • Good interpersonal skills, comfortable liaising with academic colleagues, tutors and students both face-to-face and in a virtual environment.

  • Experience of working with students from a range of cultural backgrounds

  • Excellent written communication skills in English

  • Reliable internet connection.

  • We can only consider candidates who are UK residents. UK residency typically means you must reside in the UK for at least 183 days per tax year.  

  • Due to the freelance nature of this role, we cannot accept applications from candidates on a student visa (previously a tier 4 visa)

  • Experience in keeping and maintaining up to date records of meetings with students


Desirable criteria

  • Experience of teaching in an online environment

  • Familiarity of the UK Higher Education sector and UK Quality Assurance 

  • Relevant Higher Education teaching qualification.

  • Fellowship recognition by AdvanceHE

  • Experiencing of developing content for psychology modules for the online environment, including creating unit plans, recording lectures, seminar sessions and assessments

  • Experience of teaching across the core BPS curriculum.

  • Experience of supervising students with their dissertations.

  • Experience of developing students’ employability.

  • Hold chartered membership of the British Psychological Society

  • Experience in working with students with support needs

You will need to participate in our freelance contractor online New Tutor Training that runs for 2 weeks from Tuesday 10th to Monday 23rd March 2026.


New Tutor Training is mandatory and is scheduled over a 2-week period. However, this does not require you to be online for a 2-week period. Instead, you will engage in tasks and activities across the 2-week course such as the following:

  1. Engage with a discussion forum

  2. Complete the compulsory training - GDPR and Prevent Duty

  3. Grade and provide feedback on an example student submission

  4. Read up on key KOL and University of Essex Online policies

  5. Complete quizzes, e.g. plagiarism quiz
